Tips and Cool Artwork

The following are a series of tips and samples brought to you courtesy of Wayne Kaplan and the Orange Coast Corel User Group. We hope to be adding to and changing these frequently, so make sure to stop in and see what’s new…
(Last Update: 5/15/00)
Using Draw to Create Web Pages… This is a set of web pages created directly from Draw. It was done quickly as a presentation for an OC-CUG meeting. Note that even the page background is part of the Draw file. The original Draw8 file can be downloaded as well. (It is a self-extracting EXE file). (1/9/99)

Streaming Video… This is a page I set up for my sister’s high school reunion. It includes several small video files created with Real Producer and designed to be played with Real Player. They were created from 8mm home movies shot in 1958-1960 then converted to VHS and finally digitized with Real Producer. (5/30/00)

Using Clip Masks in Photo-Paint (PDF file)… For my Parents’ 60th wedding anniversary, I created a fantasy photograph, superimposing 3 separate images of them into a photo of the Palomar Ballroom, where they first met. I took advantage of Photo-Paint 8’s new clip mask feature for this. This presentation is published by Unleashed Productions on their website: (Click to See). (8/1/98) Gif Animations…These are a series of web pages, created by Wayne Kaplan, for a seminar presented at the International CorelDRAW User Conference. (8/27/97)
Tips on Web graphics… These are a series of web pages, created by Wayne Kaplan, that appear on the CD accompanying Mastering CorelDraw 8, by Rick Altman. (Updated 12/15/97) 10 Minute Art… This is an image that was created in just a few minutes in Photo-Paint 7. It made heavy use of the new Image Sprayer tool. (5/8/97)
Virtual Pen Pals… These are very special submissions from Betsy and her husband Robert. You might call them  “virtual” members of our user group, as they do not even live in our state. We met via the Internet. They both have Athetosis, a form of Cerebral Palsy. Read what Robert has to say and check out Betsy's Photo-Paint artwork. Her image of a mansion-turned Bed and Breakfast was entered in Corel's design contest, and was in the running as a monthly winner—quite an inspiration!

The Boss… Here's some quick artwork that made use of one of the 3rd party special effect add-ins, supplied with Photo-Paint. In a few minutes, we were able to create a very 3-dimensional looking image frame.
(5/7/96)
Use a Blend instead of a Lens… Lenses are a great tool for lightening and tinting objects, as well as other cool effects. Sometimes, however, it's more effective to work from a blend. Check it out! (This technique can often be replaced by use of the new color adjustment tools, first available in Draw 7, but there are times when it is still the most effective way to reach your goal.) (2/15/96, updated 4/3/97)
Adding/Subtracting Color… These examples demonstrate the duo-tone technique in Photo-Paint for enhancing black and white images with color, and another using black and white to add emphasis in a color image. (8/6/96)  Transparency Masks in Photo Paint… Not sure what the heck to do with transparency masks? Neither was I, but I finally did a little experimenting. Here are the results. (5/30/96)
Animal House… Here is a fun piece, submitted by OC-CUG member, Betty Gerstner. It was created using scanned images and made heavy using of masking and objects in Photo-Paint. (6/25/96)  Contours versus Sizing/Scaling… To create uniform frame shapes, Scaling or Sizing doesn’t usually cut it. Contouring is the tool to choose. (2/15/96)
Interlocking 3D Rings… Here is an example of using PowerClips to achieve an effect that would be very difficult without this wonderful tool. (3/1/96)  Rusty’s Page…I promised my dog, Rusty, he could have a page to express his point of view—so, here it is. (3/1/96)
Stay Tuned, more to come…
